Gaga. I must keep moving until the end.

June 20, 2012

It’s no doubt that this Spring semester has taken a lot out of me. We finished off our choreographic works, have performed student works and professional repertory, the highlight of which was dancing on the main stage at Suzanne Dellal. This week, I finish my studies with technical exams. But in an effort to squeeze out just a little bit more dance from this experience in Israel, I’m turning to Gaga.

A Letter to Myself, In the Spirit of Packing Lists

June 15, 2012

Dear August 2011 Carlo,

With approximately two weeks left in Israel, I am preparing to leave in the way I know best:  making lists. As I decide what to pack and what to do away with, I find myself revisiting a familiar place in my mind and it’s where you are now, packing and freaking out about leaving for Israel. Now almost ten months wiser about living in this place, I’ve decided to compile a few packing lists for you, my August 2011 self:

  • things you’ll be glad you brought
  • things you had no idea you needed
  • things you need to buy right away
  • things you totally don’t need

Hebrew Update: YouTube Videos

April 20, 2012

In Hebrew class, we sometimes use YouTube as a audio-visual aid. I’ve included here two of my favorites. If you can’t understand Hebrew, listen to the rhythm and sounds of the language. It’s really quite beautiful, in my opinion.

Details in another post to come soon. I’m quite looking forward to presenting my work in two shows next month, including Visiting Voices, the collaborative show among the Rothberg International School arts programs, Art JerusalemJerusalem Sounds, and Dance Jerusalem, produced by Kyle Georgina Marsh.

Yes, we’re learning more repertory!

February 27, 2012

Tomorrow marks day three of a marathon of sorts learning the newest piece to be studied and performed by the Jerusalem Academy Dance Ensemble.

We are working on a section from Crystal Pite‘s Matter of the Maker, taught by Sharon Vazanna. The piece was originally created for the Cullberg Ballet, from Sweden. Though learning the section so quickly is temporarily taking a toll on my body, my curiosity about the piece and the collateral research both trump the soreness in my hamstrings, glutes, and fibularis muscles. I’m so grateful to be learning this repertory!

I remember seeing Pite’s Ten Duets on a Theme of Rescue performed by Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet a few years ago at the State Theater in New Brunswick. Here is a video trailer of the piece I had seen those years ago.

This is really some winter “break.” At least I’ll be ready to hit next week’s start of the Academy’s Spring Semester head on!
